Richard II - Type IIIa (c.1390-1399) - Spink 1695; North 1329
Cross on breast - annulet in hair - quadrefoil with pellet at centre of Rev cross Obv + RICARD REX ANGL' Z FRAN' Rev CIVI/TAS*/EBOR/ACI - York mint Type III coins have a new bust with close hair, a flatter crown and a cross on the breast. The IIIa bust is coarser than that of IIIb, but other aspects are common to both sub-types. The lettering is of intermediate style and there is an enigmatic mark (escallop?) after TAS. Pellet clusters on the reverse are of late type with the pellets close or conjoined as a trefoil. The quatrefoil in the centre of the cross is of a new form with a distinct central pellet.

2nd C Roman silver coin - sent for ID Very interesting - nothing I recognize at first sight - the object(?) on the reverse is particularly puzzling. The ID may need to wait until we see what cooks off - and what's left. One good thing is when I can figure out what I'm looking at, I'll be very surprised if there is more than a single type with this reverse. Okay then Chris, This is the (in)famous "Tribute Penny" of Tiberius. There is zero evidence that the type was even circulating in Judea in the 30's AD., but many insist this must have been the coin about which Christ said (in Matthew, I think) "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and unto God, that which is God's". |

So-called "Danube" bridge sestertius - it's really highly unlikely to have been any single-span bridge over the mile-wide Danube. That bridge had several support "islands" - more likely it celebrates the re-building of the stone bridge between Rome and the large island in the Tiber. I believe this took place during Trajan's reign. ML |
